Collaborative Wayfinding – Our approach to attain Enterprise UX Maturity

Recently we were tasked with solving UX related problems on a data intensive, enterprise scale web application. The application will be used by customs officers and traders to export & import goods across countries. The exercise was strictly time-bound (5 days) and challenging giving us thoughts to eat and perspectives to sleep over. Yet we devised an approach so unique which not only addresses the enterprise needs, but also characterises its long term UX growth model.

We started collecting artefacts on the business domain through various resources like SMEs, research and developer connect programs. It all started with a classroom mode with people explaining us the business landscape, user types, their roles and tasks. Thanks to the various requirement elicitation techniques we follow at Imaginea Design Labs, we were able to ascertain all UX related issues on the current system very quickly.

Now the major challenge is to derive insights from our domain understanding. We understood that the organisation’s developer ecosystem had no metaphors or visual models of these concepts. We started building these models one after the other. Developers were excited to see the visual language resonating with their DB structures and business logic.

We conducted a co-creation workshop with a team of 20 developers with avg domain expertise more than 4 years. Interesting observations, provocative thoughts, user painpoints & feel-good factors floated on the air and left us blind-folded. Yet we digested all the feedbacks quickly and converted them into actionable items.

Coming up with UX strategy:

We redefined the mental model of the system and the way users worked with processes. All user needs are attended to without losing focus on the flexibility and scalability of the system. We were able to remodel the entire user experience around tasks, efficiency and clarity of information. The redesigned workflow was “awesome” according to the developers and management. From the efficiency point of view, we were able to show a phenomenal difference in task completion rate by 70% using the new user interface. Extrapolating these numbers, the new interface should be able to free up a user (with current workload) by almost 2 hours. That’s huge, ain’t it?

Design has to be perpetual & should be in the DNA of everyone who is associated with the product lifecycle. Design is all about empathizing with end-users, understanding their emotions and environment. Also design thinking comes from clarity of thought throughout the product development lifecycle. We were able to instill this thought process among the developer community. Developers felt turbo-charged and empowered after the workshop (see them beaming on the picture below).
